With a customized lighting solution, Europoles has elevated the Auestadion sports arena in Kassel, Germany, to the state of the engineering art. The specialist company for poles, masts, and towers, with headquarters in Neumarkt, Bavaria, designed and erected the highly impressive floodlight system that was first put into operation last weekend. The history-laden stadium, serving as home turf for the German football club KSV Hessen Kassel, was built in 1953, with parts of the arena now officially listed as protected heritage. As a result of the lighting upgrade, the stadium conforms with the new specifications of the German Football Association for television broadcasts. The floodlight system celebrated its premiere on Friday, 2 May, at the home game of KSV against the second team of FC Bavaria.
Four masts, each 42 metres tall, with a total of 170 floodlights, immerse the Auestadion arena in Kassel in daylight-bright illumination at the press of a button. At long last, this new system now enables evening television broadcasts from the stadium – a prerequisite set by the German Football Association for granting the team its licence for the new Third League.
The implemented design in Kassel features a mast configuration that protrudes far over into the interior area of the stadium. This means that the masts, as well as the light platforms mounted on the masts, are strongly inclined toward the playing field. The masts, dramatically leaning over the stadium, offer interior ladders that allow access to the light platforms.
The final assembly and erection of the four steel masts, produced in the Europoles plant in Regensburg, Bavaria, took place in only 3 days, and was accompanied by extensive interest shown in the media. A special crane lifted the mast sections, weighing up to nine metric tonnes, into place – as well as the eight-tonne light platforms with their floodlights and cables. The floodlights are mounted under the platforms, which allow standing area to maintenance personnel while they service the lamps.
All requirements placed on the floodlight system were effectively fulfilled: the best of visual conditions for the athletes, optimal lines of sight for the spectators, as well as brilliant, non-glare light for television broadcast. When darkness falls, the masts immerse the stadium in dramatically appealing light.
